KIN 857: Promoting Positive Youth Development Through Sports
Instructor: Daniel Gould
Fall 2011
This course aims to teach about the important life lessons that children can learn through their participation in sports. It addresses many factors such as sport specialization, coaching, parenting, and how children can have positive development through their involvement with sports. For this class we had to create a program that we felt could help promote positive youth development. I chose to apply a program at the International School of Luxembourg with the Varsity Women's basketball team that I coach at the school. Program SOAR (Successful Organized Athletes with Responsibility) was created to help them not only on the basketball court, but also to help them learn valuable life lessons through their experience with basketball.

KIN 855: Psychosocial Bases of Coaching
Instructor: Marty Ewing
Fall 2011
This course explored the psychology and sociology of coaching and the mental components that are present for both athletes and coaches. It addressed many factors such as human growth and development, how motor skills are acquired, and the philosophy of coaching. For this class we had to write our own coaching philosophy based on what we learned and our own principles and experiences. I have played basketball for many years and been coaching for a long time as well. This paper really made me focus my ideas and beliefs about coaching into one place.

KIN 854: Legal and Administration Issues of Coaching
Instructor: Rick Atkinson
Spring 2012
This course explored the legal aspects that an administrator or coach will need knowledge of as they work with athletes. This course also discussed the responsibilities that are needed in order to provide a sound and safe athletic program. It explained how to assess and manage risk, and gave foresight into how to protect athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators from litigation. We were able to explore many scenarios in this course that related to real life situations that a coach, athlete or administrator may face in terms of the law. We covered many litigious areas of athletics and for our final project we were able to combine all these different areas in different court case scenarios. This class and project really helped me look at the legal aspects of athletics through the eyes of administrators and coaches, not just as an athlete.

EAD 850: Multicultural Education
Instructor: Riyad A. Shahjahan
Spring 2012
This course created knowledge of different social dynamics that included race, gender, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, religion, and socioeconomic differences. We explored differences, diversity, power, and meaning and reflected on how all these different aspects play a critical role in educational settings. Self reflection was a big part of this course and over the semester I really began thinking about education and how to think differently and critically as an educator. For my final project I was able to explore an educational policy. I chose Race to the Top and did a critical policy analysis to break down the pros and cons of how this policy promotes multicultural education.

KIN 856: Physical Bases of Coaching
Instructor: George Harnick
Summer 2012
The course focused on the aspects of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, the biomechanics of movement, the principles of training and designing a program for athletes, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, injury prevention, nutrition, and the physiology and principles of training. These fundamentals helped teach how to optimize the performance of the athletes we coach. We created many tools in this course that we can use as coaches to help our athletes optimize their performance. For one of the projects we had to create a nutritional recovery solution for the athletes we coach. I was able to create a nutritional handout for the girls basketball team that I coach at the International School of Luxembourg.

ED 800: Concepts of Education
Instructor: Steve Weiland
Summer 2012
This is a foundational course in the MAED program that provides an opportunity to think and explore ideas about our educational beliefs and the many different forms of inquiry related to it. This course invites students to consider the core issues of educational theory, inquiry, interpretation, and criticism of educational ideas. It made me look at educational ideas and practices from a lot of different perspectives. I was able to simulate ethnographic inquiry as I watched the movie Whale Rider and experienced the Maori of New Zealand as a "participant observer".

Fall 2012
This course further developed my knowledge and ideas of teaching literacy in elementary education. We learned many characteristics of effective reading instruction that included the classroom environment, classroom activities, fluency, motivation, decoding, comprehension and also collaboration. TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: Patricia Edwards
Fall 2012
This course taught how to accommodate literacy learning differences. We focused on linguistic and cultural differences, motivational differences, learning disabilities that could cause differences and also how to teach effective literacy instruction despite these differences. I was able to learn a great deal and many techniques to use with the many English Language Learners that are in my classroom. For our final project we were asked to create and apply lessons to a student based on the techniques learned throughout the course. I worked with one of my ELL students and was able to execute literacy instruction to help her proficiency with English language literacy.

TE 849: Methods and Materials for Teaching Child and Adolescent Literature
Instructor: Laura Apol
Spring 2013
This course explored child and adolescent literature as we examined different genres, and contemporary issues that are associated with these genres. The reading list included picture books, novels, graphic novels, and film as we tried to get a working sense of the what all child and adolescent literature was comprised of, and at the same time explore the conversations that surround each piece of literature. I learned a great deal about looking at literature with a more critical eye, questioning and reexamining my beliefs, and teaching methods when it comes to involving children in literature. For one of our assignments we read a great deal of multicultural literature, and were asked to examine our own thoughts and beliefs on this topic, how we relate these thoughts to ourselves as educators, and why accurate and authentic multicultural literature is so important for students to be exposed to.
